The second dame is definitely screaming.

That was poorly phrased. I’m watching a pre-code movie about a shady dame who's told that to her face. But this isn’t a 1930’s melodrama. More like Roman patrician at his country villa having a slave girl punished for disobedience, or maybe he’s just the sort who enjoys the sound of pretty girls screaming.

Which is actually a plausible scenario.
