Actually, some stone, such as limestone, will burn. But the real reasons castles burn quite nicely is that everything inside the walls is made of wood!

When you burn limestone you get quicklime, but you need wood or coal to burn it. So that was done with much of the stone from Bedford Castle after Henry III had captured it. He hanged 80 of the defenders from the battlements first, though (the women and prisoners were allowed to leave before the mine under the keep was fired.
The local Bedfordshire blue clay does contain a quantity of carboniferous material, so with a coal fire to start it off the brick kilns are to an extent self-firing.
All this talk of burning rocks puts me in mind of torture with red hot irons, which is quite as disquieting as it sounds.

He started with the scene in the 2001 film version of Quo Vadis, where Ursus rescues Lygia from the bull in the arena.
Damian thought it would be a better idea if the pious Christian girl won her martyr's crown by being mailed naked to a cross, with Ursus standing at the ready with a whip.
In the next two Damian experimented with methods of getting her up on that thing.
In the final manip Ursus has traded his whip for hammer and nails. Lygia's feet have left the ground for the last time, and her head is thrown back in a heart stopping scream.
