I heard that this place was where I could write my random thoughts and rants, so I hope I'm not doing something totally out of the place here...

I'm feeling a bit down and out now, having to work through the weekends and still seeing no end to the task.

And I came across a thread in one of the local internet communities, saying how he'd like to beat up some random Chinese people on the streets. It was the biggest website of certain sports fans, and people all commented about how they feel the same. Racism is so rampant where I live and the people just don't have any awareness of the problem here.

I argued and got tons of insults for 'defending Chinese' in that thread. But somehow managed to get two people to agree that racism is a bad thing. But I'll see similar threads tomorrow again so it doesn't really matter. It's not the only reason I feel this way, but I really wish I could just migrate to some place else where I don't have to check if it's 1930 or 2020 any more.

Fortunately, I came across this video, which somewhat restored my faith in people:

I hope I could muster enough strength to finish my job today, so I could have at least a few hours to take some rest and hopefully to finish the next chapter of my story before the weekends is over.

Sorry for the rants.

I'm thinking of changing my CF-name. Anyone OLD in England is soon expected to sit at home and die quietly.

Seriously, the rest of the world is saying "You can't be serious!" when they see what our non-restrictions are.

My European holidays have not been cancelled.

A large conference I'm committed to go to has not been cancelled.

I am expecting any day they both will be cancelled, but in the meantime, how can I plan anything?

In Belgium, everything is closed except pharmacies and stores that sell food.
The rush to the stores is unimaginable, people make reservations as if we were at war!
In addition, we close bars and restaurants and all these fools rub shoulders by scouring the shelves of stores.
There is no more toilet paper, in my opinion, they must confuse coronavirus with dysentery.
I hope they also stock up on condoms so they don't give us a generation of idiots like them.

Be proactive and cancel everything. That's the plan, cancel with extreme prejudice ;)
(if anyone questions your decision just cough convincingly on the phone)

Conferences are terrible, as they bring together all sorts of people who usually have all sorts of contacts, from many different places, mix them all up, and then send them back to spread whatever they might have caught.

The example of the Biogen conference in Boston has become infamous, a small corporate conference with 175 participants has caused at least 100 infections https://www.boston25news.com/news/h...osed-indefinitely/B3UTQ553RBF2BLK4A7AK4T77UI/

We just need to cancel everything for a while, so the virus doesn't get to cancel us, we'll have to go through with this for a couple of weeks before the results will be evident, that's the nature of the game

Here, most things are being done at the state and local level, with limited guidance or help from the feds. New York is usually # 1 in any infectious disease, whether it is HIV, Lyme, West Nile, etc and this is proving no exception. I expect to see things close to shutdown, like in much of Europe very soon. On the plus side, we do have a very capable State Health Dept, with some first rate scientists and clinicians.

In the areas the feds do control, like customs at airports, we have seen thousands of travelers returning from Europe crowded into arrival areas for many hours awaiting "screening" (which will amount to little more than having their temperatures taken and answering a few questions). So much for social distancing..

What these pillocks fail to comprehend is that they are dealing with a generation that lived through WW2, the cold war, Asian flu foot and mouth disease and many other crises and are not as prone to panic as these 21st century fairies.

All South Caroline Schools closed (just as well, the fool factories just confuse the young'uns). First confirmed case reported this morning in Myrtle Beach.

Hope to hold out a while. I have my Kel- Tec-KSG, pump-action 12 gauge and the door barricaded against any would-be toilet paper scavengers!

Seriously, I'll try to let you all know before the fever spikes.

There is still a stock of these, somewhere, but after so long, only Queen Elisabeth knows where, and her memory is a little bit fading!;)

If you watch US media, you would think that, due to Trump personally, the US is far worse with Corona than anywhere else. Here are matches of regions on the UK (one of the least stricken countries in Europe, with US states with similar populations by number of cases.
Scotland (121) - Minnesota (35)
South East (144) - New Jersey (74)
London (313) - Virginia (45)
Entire UK 1,140, Entire US 3,200 US has 5 times the population

What are numbers? The whole weekend, I had an intermitting light headache, from time to time an itch in my throat. My body temperature rose once quickly to just below 37°C, to drop back even so fast. I felt a little bit ill, but actually rather deeply tired, by moments. I took the opportunity of the weekend to take a rest and sleep in the afternoons. But otherwise, I got a normal life. Am I infected by Corona? Or is it a coincidential viral infection of another kind? Could be Corona, but the symptoms are so mild, no one would consider to test me. I silently hope that it is the case, and that it will fade away the next days, and that it would be it for me. But in that case, there could be much more, numerous, mildly infected people like me, staying under the radar and not showing up in the government's 'body counts'.

Reminds me of Boccacio's 'Decameron', about people fleeing for the plague, and telling spicy stories to each other to pass time. :icon_writing:
We now have CF as a world wide platform for doing that!
Great minds - I mentioned that thought to l'bogo
and he's been sending me links to Corriere del Mezzogiorno
where they've started a Covid19 Decameron series -
three well-made short stories so far, here's the first

Number of people tested in the UK as of March 8: 23,513
Number of people tested in the US as of March 8: 1,707

As of 9am March 15 40,279 had been tested for Coronavirus in the UK, as far as I know the CDC stopped releasing testing figures and continues to do so.

The official excuse is

† CDC is no longer reporting the number of persons under investigation (PUIs) that have been tested, as well as PUIs that have tested negative. Now that states are testing and reporting their own results, CDC’s numbers are not representative of all testing being done nationwide.

However as many of us note many aggregator sites manage to track statistical data without the resources of federal and state government so I am not convinced.

Edit: Aha update it does seem someone was awake to this at the CDC, thought I had to dig a bit with my searches

So total testing in the US was 15,749 as of saturday
