I guess that's one way. There must be a technical definition (>x amount of viral RNA detected by PCR? >y amount of anitbody detected in an antibody test?). Both of these would seem problematic, since recovered patients can still show viral RNA and after all vaccines are supposed to generate active antibodies. However the levels of both tests will vary from person to person. Maybe those tests combined with symptoms? (That eliminates people who are asymptomatic, which I assume they do, because by definition they really don't know about those people.) It probably also dependent on national health agencies. You go to the hospital if the doctor says you should, and that decision probably varies. I would assume if you need ventilation you are in a bad way. I also assume that in places where hospitals are full, they don't admit you without someone second-guessing your physician.
So, as Eulalia says, symptomatic, positive for the virus, and still alive, even if you are on a ventilator and are "inactive" because you can't move.
(I detect a note of skepticism in Tree's question. It's probably better defined than tests for "high blood pressure", though. Maybe, like "high blood pressure", a set of time-sequenced tests are required for a good diagnosis.)

In Germany, people are often wishing each other "Einen guten Rutsch ins Neue Jahr!", which is most probably derived from an old meaning of "Rutsch" (= "Slide") instead of "[kurze] Reise" (= "[short] trip / journey"), but most people of my age understand it as a well wishing for a good slide on ice into the New Year!

So, I wish everyone here "Einen sehr [= very] guten Rutsch ins Neue Jahr!" and "ALLES GUTE !" (= ALL THE BEST FOR YOU ! )

And be careful with your wishing!
I would not be a true German without a copied monologue about the lessons from the last year for the new one and have fun as much as you can by reading this:

Be careful when wishing!

An urgent warning! When the big bell strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, please do not under any circumstances say something like "Thank God this crappy old year is over, the new one can only get better!"

Think of how many people did exactly that 12 months ago - and what has become of it!

Let's admit it: even if you're up to your neck in shit, your lift can always go down one more level! There's little point in telling fate which direction to take, it won't stick to it anyway.

Well, they say "hope dies last" - but hope is probably already infected with Covid-19, too, and we shouldn't expect too much until she gets better.

Generally speaking, we are living in a particularly bizarre time right now. Never before have there been more opportunities open to humanity for reason-oriented education based on scientific evidence. Even the media means for its dissemination are limitless, as is communication with each other. In the past, one still had to fear for one's life if one wanted to convince the general public that the earth is in fact a sphere - today, one simply claims that it is a disk if one becomes bored or uncomfortable with truth and logic, and celebrates one's own stupidity as a rebellion against the state-controlled intellectual elite. And since the Catholic Church of the 17th century can tweet no more, you can just follow the craziest conspiracy theorists on Telegram.

Considering our complete inability to cope with overall social problems and crises (be it pandemic / climate / migration / TV programmes or a really intelligent chairmanship in our largest democratic parties) as well as the dubious characteristic of preferring to invent alternative fake news „facts“ rather than accept reality, Homo sapiens as an empathic individual guided by reason seems to be a discontinued model of evolution. A humanity that prefers to look the other way when refugees drown and are beaten up at borders, but prefers to watch a football World Cup being held in Qatar, of all places: especially Qatar, should really no longer be allowed to call itself „humanity“.

My suggestion: To refuse reason out of petulance, to ignore the capacity for compassion out of selfishness and to switch off the mind out of convenience should be punished by the elite lizard council of our disc world with the withdrawal of the digital humanity passport, compulsory mulled wine vaccination and a lifelong ban on firecrackers. Maybe this will help to change our thinking.

A Happy New One !

And by the way: When I read this about one of the most famous Dutch Covid-19-downplayers, I got headaches from shaking my head.
This man really wrote on Twitter something like "Corona positive. It's about time too."

How could you be such an intelligent man - an economist ! - and obviously believe you could challenge a virus? This virus does not care anything about your believe that you will survive this "little flu"!
Usually, the only purpose of a virus is its reproduction and if it can kill you by accident or by coincidence, it will do that and you should never be happy about to be infected by it because no one can predict if you will have a mild illness or a severe one with death in the end.

Now this man is dead.

Possibly, such people will have insciptions on their graves like "Not to be alive any more does not necessarily mean that you are really dead!"

I am of the opposite opinion and I am still shaking my head about such intelligent but incredibly stubborn people ...

In my town, a man in his early 40's who refused to get vaccinated died of COVID, leaving a wife and four children. I just do not understand that. His wife was vaccinated.
Cardinal Raymond Burke, the former archbishop of St. Louis and an arch conservative with a doctorate in "canon law" (which means he knows a lot of Latin and is obviously intelligent enough to assimilate and organize facts) refused to wear a mask, refused to get vaccinated (and gave credence to the rumor that "they" were spritzing in a chip), got COVID and almost died. He is just now getting to the point where the physical therapists have restored his ability to say Mass, after being sedated on a ventilator left him completely bed-ridden (he is 73). He thinks God saved him for some "great purpose"--which begs the question of why he made God save him instead of just taking precautions. Maybe he should start playing with poisonous snakes too, to test his "faith". That's biblical. It's also asinine (I could suggest a species, but I will control my impulses).
Hospitals in the US are filling up again, and medical personnel are stretched thin. The army and navy have had to send help. Omicron apparently is less deadly, but more infectious, so I guess people think its a victory when a smaller percentage of a bigger infected population die, even if that means more deaths overall.

I always thought that the point of the "parable of the talents" was that God expects you to get off your rear and try, not crouch in a fetal position waiting for God to intervene.

Like one of our German comedians. Otto Waalkes once said in one of his programs:
zitat-und-aus-dem-chaos-sprach-eine-stimme-zu-mir-lachle-und-sei-froh-es-konnte-schlimmer-komm...jpg
“And out of the chaos a voice said to me: Smile and be happy, things could get worse! And I smiled and was happy - and it got worse. "
―Otto Waalkes

Happy New Year! That's my plea.
Whether it is, we will soon see.
Last year was shite,
But I that hope we might
From the current darkness soon be free.

May your cross stand tall and stout.
May you live your life without
Pain and sadness
Agony and madness
The whole of the new year throughout.

Happy New Year to all who visit the Coffee Shop! If the wine is too chilled, this slave girl will warm it for you.

Another year gone…. Thank you to the admins who make this site run smoothly (and hardly ever cause it to crash!), and to all who contribute the odd coin, joke, photo, artwork, story or comment. This place just about keeps me clinging to what’s left of my sanity. Happy new year!
:p

Record high 431 new cases of covid here yesterday and 1 death
Is that the "Delta"- or the "Omikron"-Variant?
In Germany as in the whole of Europe, most cases are now the extremely infectious "Omikron"-Variant, but according to the last reports from our German virologists, this "Omikron / Omicron" seems to have "specialized" its development in order to infect "only" the upper regions of nose, mouth and pharynx. It usually does not affect the lungs as "Delta" did, except in un-vaccinated, already severely ill or very old persons. So, it would be nice for most of us human beings, when Omikron would stay like this and not mutate in a further way.

In our district there were 57 new Covid cases as of January 1st and fortunately none of them died

US numbers, as of December 30 (no data has been collected since due to the holiday):
Total cases last 30 days: 53,795,407
Total deaths last 30 days: 820,355
Source: CDC COVID Data Tracker
The site does not break the numbers down by variant.
For Hillsborough County, Florida (where I live):
Total cases last 7 days: 5147
Total deaths last 7 days: <10

There are some things to take from this:
1 - All of these numbers represent a steady downward track from the peak in December 2020/January 2021
2 - According to other reports all or nearly all of the hospitalizations and deaths are persons who are unvaccinated.
3 - The majority of those who are unvaccinated have refuse due to political beliefs, belief in unsubstantiated stories spread by the internet, belief in their own invulnerability or procrastination.
4 - COVID may now have become what I have always thought this world needed - a virus that kills off stupid people.

Are these numbers saying nearly 1 out of 6 Americans got covid in those 30 days?!?!?!

I'm not buying that... and I have had my vaccine, its booster, and the second booster!!!
