Governor Windar’s Plantation- June 5, 1716.
“Mr. Tree,” I said to the disreputable looking man sprawled in the chair in front of my desk. He smelled like a mixture of whiskey and pig excrement, not surprising for a drunkard who herded swine.
“Well, Governor Windar, sir,” he stammered, “What was it someone as important as yourself wishes to discuss with a humble servant such as myself?”
“Tree, we need to do something about that Dark Princess.”
“Oh, Governor, I wouldn’t mess with her and her crew were I you. A fiercer group of savage Amazons you won’t find anywhere on earth. They will cut a man’s, well, Governor, you know, off without a second thought if he so much as makes a move against them.”
“That may be, Tree, but we need some law and order in this colony. With savage Indians on one side and brigands on the other, we will soon perish. We need a militia and I am appointing you to raise and train one to apprehend the Dark Princess and as many of her dastardly crew as you can. If you do so, I have a nice plot of prime land, 50 acres worth, that will be yours. In the meantime, I can provide a small stipend for your expenses and the like and something for the men as well.”
“That’s very generous of you Governor, but how many men will join?”
“I will issue a proclamation requiring every able bodied man to serve. You might get a good dozen or so perhaps.”
“Well, that’s right generous of you Governor. But I hear tell that the Dark One herself was in this very room a few days ago. Why did you not seize her then?”
“Had I done so, her crew would have been on me and have freed her before sunset, no doubt at the cost of my own poor head. No, Tree, without a militia worthy of the name, we are the mercy of these damned scoundrels.”
“I’ll do my best to bring glory on you and on His Majesty,” Tree said, rising. “I shall be diligent in my efforts.”
