Uplifting Thoughts for the Isolated and Depressed in Times of Plague

I just think this one of the most beautiful songs ever:

Time stands still

John Dowland: Third Booke of Ayres 1604

Time stands still with gazing on her face
Stands still and gaze for minutes
Houres and yeares, to her give place
All other things shall change
But shee ramaines the same
Till heavens changed have their course
And time hath lost his name.

Cupid doth hover up and downe
Blinded with her faire eyes
And fortune captive at her feete
Contem'd and conquerd lies.
Cupid doth hover up and downe
Blinded with her faire eyes
And fortune captive at her feete
Contem'd and conquerd lies.

When fortune, love and time attend on
Her with my fortunes, love, and time
I honour will alone.
If bloudlesse envie say,
'Dutie hath no desert,'
Dutie replies that envie knowes
Her selfe his faithfull heart.

My setled vowes and spotlesse faith
No fortune can remove
Courage shall shew my inward faith
And faith shall trie my love.
My setled vowes and spotlesse faith
No fortune can remove
Courage shall shew my inward faith
And faith shall trie my love.
"the lascivious pleasing of a lute." It has been mentioned that a Lute player spends half his time tuning his instrument and the other half changing strings.

Beautiful, indeed. As is

But this should be an uplifting thread.. this music is certainly uplifting to the hairs on the back of my neck ...
It’s Tchaikovsky but not as we know it.
This follows the Russian liturgical style, which is enhanced by the more open tone used, in contrast to the more covered sound of the Western Choral tradition. There is always something moving in Russian choral music.

Totally agree.. and the bass voices seem to go deeper than western choirs, am I imagining that? anyway there is certainly some quality that gets me in the tingles.

No, it is largely a question of timbre and open tone, although many Russian composers wrote parts for the Basso Profundo voice, common in Russia and Eastern Europe, but rare in the West. Some arrangers sometimes add an auxiliary Bass part two octaves lower than the Soprano melody and this creates the impression of greater depth.
