Velut Luna - A Tribute to Sibilla Cumana

Go to CruxDreams.com
Whilst Lucius' house is identified as the 'House of the Faun' in the story, the background to this manipulation shows the grand peristyle courtyard of the 'House of the Marine Venus' in Pompeii, a remarkably well preserved example of a Roman formal garden, surrounded by colonnades.
It certainly looks like a wonderfully relaxing spot to spend a quiet afternoon, and if two such lovely girls were also there, that would just add to the ambience and pleasure of the day. :) Lucius had splendid taste in both gardens and slavegirls; that much is clear. ;)

Beautiful portrait-type manip, Bob! The figures look perfect.

Slavegirls of Pompeii

This is a new manipulation showing Amica and Eulalia in the garden at Lucius' house. The models are Ana-Maria Ilinca and Alice. Both are composite figures, and with the exception of Amica's blonde hair, they have been created using authentic image components from their respective photo sessions. The slave dresses have been applied in multiple sections, courtesy of HBO's publicity images from 'Spartacus'.

They appear very happy to be slaves!

An incredible aspiration.

Creditable is a questionable thought!

A remarkable composition, as usual, testifying to superb mastery of the medium :)
I like the way your slavegirls look so happy (and sexy...). A nice change from the more common dejected or suffering expressions on the faces of slaves.

I had no idea that there were cameras in Pompeii.

How else could Bob have got such a perfect image?:confused::confused:

Many thanks to everybody for the positive responses to my latest 'Amica' picture - especially to my fellow manip artists active in the slavegirl genre, who may be interested in the technical details of the composition. The picture was created in two Photoshop files (effectively one for each figure) containing forty five visible layers, including colour blending filters. I am pleased to see that the cheerful disposition of Amica and Eulalia has attracted some comments, since this is intended to reflect Luna's and Eul's sense of delight in developing the original story.

The figure of Eulalia is a relatively straightforward blend of Alice's face and body from two pictures. Whilst they were published in separate series by different studios, both pictures were in fact taken during a single session by Alexey Bessarab. The collar and dress are derived from one of the costumes worn by Lesley-Ann Brandt in the role of slavegirl Naevia in HBO's 'Spartacus'.

Aisii (Ana-Maria Ilinca) is the model used most frequently by Velut Luna to depict her own character, and so Amica is portrayed by her again in this latest picture. Since Ana-Maria is naturally dark, Amica's blonde hair was applied in multiple sections, predominantly from actress Emilia Fox. The Aisii body image is taken from a 2011 session by Alfred Georg, and Ana-Maria's face comes from a 'selfie' by her husband and photographer, Daniel Ilinca. This was taken at an exhibition in Linz, Austria in 2014 and presents a spontaneous smile of joy which I found simply irresistible for translating into the new scene.

Amica's dress is based on a costume worn by actress Katrina Law, playing the character of Mira in 'Spartacus'. The colour has been changed from the original red to a more subdued blue tone. Both costumes have been blended from a number of sections, suitably distorted to fit the new wearers. The defocused background shows the peristyle garden at the 'House of the Marine Venus' in its current state of preservation. Like the other places in the story, this is a location which Luna would have known personally from her visits to Pompeii.

This pictures is my favorit from you!
Somewhere here once said, that Memoiries
are good for forum.

Vesuvius Roars.jpg
Yes, it's an amazing and dramatic image, produced by @bobinder for Velut Luna. :)

Thank you for reminding us of it, and of Velut Luna, Nobbes!

Thank you, Nobbes. Phlebas described it as, 'beauty and horror and spectacle all rolled into one', and it owes a conscious debt to Velut Luna's vision of crux art.
Having adapted Arrik Kim's photograph as her personal avatar, this cruciform figure became Luna's most self-defining image on Cruxforums.

The Ancient Mirror of the Sea

The Ancient Mirror of the Sea 21.jpg

The latest interpretation of 'The Ancient Mirror of the Sea' presents Amica with dark hair, against a defocused background of a sunset over the sea. Two portraits of Ana-Maria were blended together to produce the figure with floral decorations, and the eyes were coloured blue to fit Luna's description of her heroine.

The manipulation contains seventeen visible layers, including eight layer masks and eight blending filters. These help to present an overall effect which is intended to be harmonious in terms of colour and texture.

It's a truly beautiful image, Bob, harmonious in content, composition, and everything else, never mind just colour and texture.

Yes, Ana-Marie is a beautiful model but you have blended the images of her with consummate skill!

The Stabian Baths at Pompeii

When Amica goes into hiding in the artist's studio, Rubio persuades her to pose in the sketches he is making for his frescoes at the baths. Velut Luna does not specify which of the three public baths in Pompeii was being decorated by Rubio, but since Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema painted a reconstruction of the Stabian Baths, and this was used recently in a manipulation by @CamCrux , I like to think that this might possibly be the location that Luna had in mind.

Since Amica has an artistic connection to them, I speculated that she might have been curious enough to visit the baths in her dark-haired disguise, to view the frescoes which she had inspired. Using a detail of the upper part of the painting, Amica is portrayed by a subtly modified figure of Ana-Maria Ilinca.

Entitled, 'A Favourite Custom', Alma-Tadema's imaginative scene depicts the ladies of Pompeii delighting in the invigorating pleasures of the cold frigidarium. Kam has employed the full canvas to depict Alice entering the pool via the steps. Since she depicts the character of Eulalia in 'Amica', we can interpret this as an attractive, incidental illustration to the story. Kam's picture has obviously provided a considerable degree of inspiration for my latest 'Amica' illustration. :)
