It's so well done, so convincing. A real meditation in suffering and sacrifice.
It can't be that far fetched. There must have been a few people who went too far in their devotions, too far in their imagination. Really carrying the cross, shouldering that burden, feeling that suffering.
I know some catholics do tend towards worship of suffering almost for it's own end. Look at Opus Dei, or the Filipinos crucified at Easter. How close they must come to their fantasies, their secret pleasure.
