I had to shake my head when I saw that. I worked on a logging crew during the summers where I grew up, and I've seen that happen many times. The sawyer (chain saw guy) notches the tree on the side where he believes it's going to fall, then cuts it. But it doesn't always fall that way and pinches the saw. If you're lucky, that's all it does! This is why they sell big plastic wedges at saw shops that you drive into the kerf (the cut the saw makes) to hold it open or re-open it if you need to in order to get the saw blade out. This is why those guys work in pairs, a sawyer to run the saw, and a swamper to take care of wedging, watching out for falling limbs, etc. or figuring out which way to run. I saw a five-foot diameter pine tree fall the wrong way and smash a jeep one day but at least nobody got hurt.

But I never saw anyone just abandon the saw bar like that - nor would I have thought that tree would have regrown and healed over where it was cut.
