About The Most On Line I've Seen And Nobody's Talking

I think we should look at how to do 'joke free' or 'serious thoughts only' threads

t
I don't think it is the "joking"!

It's in the nature of discussions to deviate if nobody is keeping them on the theme.
A couple of months back we did have a serious problem with a situation where it was almost impossible to discuss anything, what ever theme got started, 3 posts later it was at "having another drink" or "hunting elves" (no offence meant). But I don't think that this is s problem right now.

One also needs to distinguish between a major branch (be it humoristic, be it just a side-step of the discussion) of a thread and just some chit-chat of no interest for the community.

Branches should be cut ans pasted in its own thread, with a link placed both where it got cut ans at the header of the new thread with a reference where it came from).
Chit-Chat could be limited to a chat room. (right above are some examples)

However: None of this creates more substance or more participation, what was the initial theme...

Hey, I can joke with a guy and a beer! I'm cool....
Sure... that's why a chat room would be helpful...
Because those jokes between members should have a place...

But having a thread pop up on the "what's new" list for it, and dozens of people wasting 30sec each time, just to find out that nothing of interest for them was added, is exactly what makes it a time consuming task to find the little signal in the lot of noise...

(or, as I said, some sort of "OT tag" that enables filtering...)

So what about the simple solution I mentioned on the previous page?

I don't think it's helpful, as stated in this reply:

We had similar discussions in a forum that I operate, around "project documentation threads".

One can kill a community by over-regulation!

The way I solved it:
- I published a member guideline that outlines some policies around "respect for serious discussions", "thread hijacking", "chit-Chat", sort of a "how to get around" that is sent to all members
- Major side discussions get cut into their own thread
- Chit-Chat get's deleted and the poster gets a PM explaining why...
- Sometimes, theme-depending, a shadow-thread for discussions/chit-chat is created in a designated sub-forum, with a thread-title that makes it immediately recognizable as such, like for example "[CHAT] About the Most online"...

People are learning quickly. Nowadays I needn't even open the "[Chat]" thread myself, members do it themselves if they want to "chat".

I'd like to chat other members real time....Just me though....

No creeps though!

Understood, and accepted!

Most of us, are somewhat intelliegent?

????? I know, Tree, you'll tell me that I've only to take my fantasy and have fun....;)...and you'll be right! I like!
But.......I"ll also wish can have discussions about these fantasies, others than
some jokes, surely funny, but not sufficient for me:
is't asking for the "Moon"?:D
PM are certainly interesting, but it could be profitable that we could do it on the forum, no?
But, perhaps I'm asking for the "moon".....

Dear messaline,
Please correct me if I have gained the wrong impression. I understand that you wish to create a thread about your fantasies so you can discuss them with other members. However you do not wish to see any flippant replies..only serious ones. If you begin your thread by stating that you want serious replies only then any moderator will feel free to remove any irrelevant chat. Stating at the start that you only want serious replies has been done in the past and members respect that. You are not asking for the moon but there is obviously no guarantee of the number of replies that you get.

I think Messa is thinking broader audience than that so any one could participate but with the understanding it doesn't disolve into aimless banter (that Tree has been known to participate in).
I could be wrong
t

I'm not against jokes, but against "all jokes": sometimes, jokes are so numerous that they encroach the thread and it's difficult to follow the story
mostly if it is serious or thoughtfull....
I'll wish a better self control from members.....
otherwise.....Messa is going to be severe!:D

It was already done in the thread that I've started: "I'll wish if we could...."

... but there is obviously no guarantee of the number of replies that you get.

Obviously, I know that and it's what I deplore...:(
