It is how traction is fixed, Hasturan, although these days traction is rarely needed to fix a fracture.

These days, anaesthetic is used, mind you....

But the heel bone (calcaneum) will support transfixion by a nail.

Exactly... it was still standard I guess in the 1970s...
What they do, is they attach wires to that traction pin which go over a pulley and are attached to weights. The purpose I guess is in a complex fracture, that the broken leg isn't much shorter when it's healed. And actually, that (the presence of the nail, and the weight) doesn't really hurt. The pin (you can as well call it a nail) stays in for quite some time... 6-8 weeks. All of the problems, and the pain, start afterwards. Due to the long immobilization, especially since a cast may have followed additionally. Today usually they apply 'intramedullary nailing'. That allows much earlier mobilization.

The nail sits in the marrow cavity of the broken bone (medulla) and is fixed at the ends by bolts which prevent the fragments of bone from twisting or sliding.

People are discharged from hospital days after suffering serious fractures which would have had them in traction for weeks.

I expect Quoom is a real gentleman who wouldn't hurt a fly....but yes, his stuff is a bit heavy, isn't it?

I have, ... as far as I can, myself.
I think I'm ready as much as I can be.

I know: no one can ever really be ready for the cross. It will always be much worse than expected, and from there it only ever gets more cruel.

At the same time, the closer it comes for me, the more I see of what happens to her, the more I know how it will be for me... the more there is of this fascination, this frenzied arousal.

Do you have any further intentions for .... preparing... me?
