I guess that in the olden days skinny half-starved (or worse) girls were 10 a penny, so slightly plumper would be much more appealing.
The modern "fashion-model" look is a recent aberration.

You know what I find incredibly hypocritical? People will applaud a woman or man posing nude if it is for "art's" sake. That is somehow intellectual or avantgarde.

But is they pose in a magazine or on film so that people can get sexual gratification it's 'porn' and tawdry.

Jesus Christ, the model in both instances is posing for economic reasons, to make money.

I suppose so. I had a friend who posed nude occasionally as an art model. She was happy to get the money, which was not that much, but liked the artistic process she said. She was not interested in posing for porn. Even so, she agreed that a lot of art and porn are both based on the view of the female body as beautiful, sexy, and sensual. I think a lot of people have some difficulty finding where the line is between art and porn, or even if that line actually exists in anything but an imaginary sense.

Sorry, I rarely swear but that was my RC education coming through.

As to what happened in the past to anyone is mostly speculation based on whether the writer was sympathetic or not. I wouldn't be surprised if when we invent a time machine we find out that Christ was crucified naked and the images were cleaned up for public consumption.

I remember reading an article where the priest writing it was insisting that women were crucified facing the cross for modesty's sake.

Considering they have only every found to skeletons that they think were crucified and both were male how the hell (got a technical once in a basketball game for saying "hell") he knew is beyond me.

But anyway if I had been a slave girl to either Pilate or one of the High Priests I would have been at least partially nude most of the time and not making any money at it!

I believe this is based on the assumption that the Romans made concessions to Jewish law in the Province of Judaea (at least prior to the major nationalist revolts.) The relevant passage is an interpretation of the Mishnah -

'According to Rabbi Eli'ezer, men are hanged with their bodies facing the people and women are hanged with their bodies facing the wood.'
