Taboo (2017)

A mysterious stranger returns to Edwardian England, carrying a treaty that gives him ownership over an immensely valuable stretch of land in the American colonies. Very soon both the Crown and the East India Trading Company show interest in his person in competitive ways.

In a change of tactics, his associate Lorna (Jessie Buckley) is apprehended and introduced to the wonders of early 19th century incarceration. Annoyingly enough, she gets rescued rather quickly.

Plot, dialogues, production design, cast – everything is spot-on. The only script flaw I can think of is that the rivalling parties are played off against each other one iteration too many.
The history seems enjoyably muddled! Edward VII 1901-10, East India Company dissolved 1858, and it never had anything to do with the American Colonies which were lost in 1783 ... :p

Why the heck have I memorised it as Edwardian? The story takes place in 1814, so it's George III (and his son as Prince Regent). But as far as I remember the story, the treaty is part of the main character's inheritance and sealed before the independence -- but I really have to re-watch it to be sure on that one.

Yes, I thought you might have meant Georgian :) And I wasn't quite right about the East India Co. having nothing to do with the American Colonies - it was the EIC which (being at the time on the verge of bankruptcy) was empowered by the UK Parliament in 1773 to export some of its tea across the Atlantic - which led to the Boston Tea Party! So the scenario isn't quite so improbable, though still pretty far-fetched.

Plot summary for "Taboo" from IMDB.com:
James Keziah Delaney returns to 1814 London after 10 years in Africa to discover that he has been left a mysterious legacy by his father. Driven to wage war on those who have wronged him, Delaney finds himself in a face-off against the East India Company, whilst playing a dangerous game between two warring nations, Britain and America.

I should add that the script has a low-key supernatural touch to it (not affecting our plausibility issue) -- still well-written, though.

False Alarm (2016)

In the course of a bank robbery a girl (Kristine Froseth) is taken hostage, handcuffed and used as a human shield during the high speed chase that follows.

Seemingly filmed in one shot and from the protagonist's point of view, this music video to The Weeknd's eponymous song borrows heavily from Hardcore Henry (2015) and, indirectly, from the ego shooter scene in Doom (2005). One may consider it odd, though, that the video shows a guard being executed via a graphic head shot, yet finds it necessary to blur out any potential panty shots (see picture 5).

wow. what about a continuation? will katerina have to undress (I hope so)?
