Silax, as I said a few days ago Tree is not a fan of whipping a woman condemned to the cross, but Valeria's scorging is truly an necessary part of the tale. The spectators' (mostly women) seem to enjoy her flogging and even think she does. Tree thinks it is more a battle of wills. Valeria cannot fully comprehend being forced to carry part of her cross naked before others of her class in society, much less before commoners. While the scourging obviously hurts, she will not satisfy the flogger and beg him to stop!
