At the point where the photos 5 & 6 weren taken, the river suddenly began to have great depth and the river bed was covered with slippery stones.
I had my arms tied and a chain around my neck.
There was a moment when I really was very afraid.

Interesting variation on the walk to the cross, don't quite see the need for it in the story but it sure is different.

that was near, was a way to break his self-esteem.
The condemned was no longer owner of his destiny. He belonged to the
executioner and he must obey any order or whim of the executioner.

So he forced Modesto to go to the river and carrying great stones with which to build the platform.

It was the maximum form of humiliation. The condemned should build his own cross.
