Awesome image!

I think the image makes more sense with the whip. Nailed through wrists and feet, her body is twisting, thrashing about under the impact of the lash. She can't twist away from it because of the upright behind her. She is reacting to the bite of the lash in the only way she can.

Without the whip, why would she be throwing her body around as shown in image two? Much too painful.

Did I say it was an awesome image? Oh yes!!!

She's three quarters tied to the cross, no escape but not yet in excrutiating pain. The nails, hammer and barbs are ready. The executioners have gone away for refreshments. How would this add to her tortures?
Does she think there is hope? This was all done to scare her?
Does she think nailing is inevitable? Get it over with.
Uncertainty is one of the best ways of playing with someone's mind. The crowd watching are just as uncertain. This adds to the show.
 
I think not destroying arteries is the highest priority when nailing. Hitting and dislocating or shattering bome may cause more permanent damage, but it also would make the nailing longer and more painful. I think a lot of this was down to the whims of the person doing the nailing, though.
 
My thought is that if the crucifixion is an execution, the executioner is unlikely to worry too much about causing severe injury, but he would want to make sure the subject did not fall off the cross because of insecure or misplaced nails.

For ritual crux, like Easter crucifixion in the Philippines, for example, one would try to miss bones, because the idea is that the person should be able to recover.

From the "Master Crucifixion Technician Manual"...

...one a four spike crux it would be fairly easy to nail both of the subject's feet without breaking bones. If nailing two feet the top foot can easily be nailed without breaking bones while she is screwed with foot against the stipe.

This of course assumes round spikes only large enough to support the weight of the condemned...

Bones fragments can damage arteries very quickly...
But it's only my vision.
If we do not want that victim spend very long time on the crux - accuracy is excessive...
(If we have a lot of victims and we hurry)

Going through the examples of how my "clients" get attached, there's one constant. It's almost always ropes plus nails. I see Hasturan does that too. That setup gives me the freedom to place the nail wherever I want to. No worry about whether it'll really hold the weight or not. If you put the nail sideways through the ankle or heel, obviously you'll crush or penetrate bones.

This is about as close as I get to the "classic" style.

And of course the scene I did for Apostate's story. The story dictates that there's no additional ropes, the nails go through the wrists, and victims are shaved. So that's what you get.

For the arms, it's a mix in my drawings whether the nails go through the wrist or palm. Historically, and for supporting the cruxee, palm is certainly wrong, but I sometimes do that anyway.
Hey I've got one girl that has a nail going through the wrist and palm! Maybe that was an apprentice carnifex who got told off, that's not the way to do it, put in another nail!
I just think that the nail twisting among the nerves if it goes right through the wrist might be so godawfully painful that the crux-girl wouldn't be dancing up a storm. So sometimes I put it through the palm if I'm either feeling merciful or want the girl to dance a lot.
More importantly, I don't always want to do crux exactly the same way.
For purpose of sheer provocation, some aren't nailed at all, or so delicately that rescue would be easy. Not that we would do that ;)

Poking around on my own foot, I try to imagine the difficulty with placing a nail where shown (3 or 4 nail site). I'm thinking (how gruesome a topic!) that it might be easier to place a nail where I've indicated with the red dot. Since the victim will always be pushing down with her feet, the nail would stay jammed between the metatarsals providing good support without tearing through flesh. This should be a spot easily found by the executioners.

Of course, I don't mean to argue against the established wisdom of the IMF on this. :rolleyes: Just thinking...is all...:D

Your legs are the strongest parts of your body and nailing your feet at your dot in a panic you could pull your feet up and rip through the tissue...

No one does "writhing in agony" better than you algabal! I also like how you show flesh puckered/swollen around the nail shafts. Adds an extra dimension...seems more realistic.
