I think you're right. I think there's an innate curiosity to see just how much a person can take. I point to an example on a game show called "Dog Eat Dog" where contestants went through challenges to eliminate other contestants or prevent from being eliminated. One of those was a challenge where two female contestants held on to trapeze bars with their hands and were then lifted and dangled over a pool of water. The first to let go would lose. They didn't need to do the challenge; they could quit and join "the dog pound" with the other loser contestants and still win some money by winning a trivia match. But the two women took the challenge, as grueling as it was.
