Galley Slaves Gallery

I find that hard to believe. Beaching a substantial vessel requires clever seamanship to avoid damage, and a lot of hauling. If we galley-slaves can't be trusted, we couldn't be let loose to help with the hauling, so we'd have to stay aboard, adding to the weight. On the Atlantic coast, at least vessels can come in on the tide and be grounded and made secure when it ebbs, in the Med there isn't even that help. I think much more likely that, for short stays, vessels were anchored offshore in sheltered bays, and the crew and slaves slept at their stations, no doubt sufficiently exhausted to sleep wherever they got a bit of space to flop down on.

Well I'm afraid I have the backing of virtually every treatise ever written on galleys on this one.

One of the reasons galley warfare was difficult is that you always have to be in proximity of a good harbor or beach to beach the galleys on at night.

Actually you cite one of the reason that galleys were such a failure outside the Med., tides. One of the problems Julius Caesar encounter when he crossed the Channel was a dearth of adequate beach for his galleys (not his transports) verses the brutal tides in the Channel.

For all it's size a galley is fairly light and you don't have to get the whole thing on the beach just enough to make it secure. And even a mid-sized galley such as a Trireme might have as many as 170-200 men (depending on Marine complement) to pull it up on the beach. And they are also fairly shallow draft vessels making it much easier.

To quote an officer from the American Civil War "I no longer doubt how the Pyramids were built. Put enough men on a rope and you can move anything."

Now as to the galley slave issue, generally warships rarely moved alone so if ships were beached one at a time there could be plenty of guard manpower, And you don't have to be set free, chained or roped in say groups of 5 how dangerous are you? Your maneuverability sucks, you can't really run as a group, you are pretty tried and hunger after a day's work on the oars. And for it to work pretty much the whole crew of slaves would have to act in concert. In fact each slave in the group of 5 has to be on board with plan.

And if you crucify one or two unruly slaves on occasion, or tie one to the ram just before going into battle I think the rest would be pretty cowed.

Even with a beautiful feisty leader such as yourself.

1. Antiquity. The good old Roman Empire, which became almost the archetype of all forms of slavery. Slave girls rowing across the Mediteranean Sea, or perhaps, even working on war galley during the Punic Wars, ending up with fresh galley slave girls from Carthage.

2. Dark Ages. The Roman Empire fell, and the barbarians took over the ruins of this once great civilization. Many once noble women are now the slaves of the Goths, who will use them as galley slaves, helping them transport the luxuries stolen from the Italian Peninsula up to northern Europe.

3. Medieval Era. The creativity can really flow here. Going from up north, with the Viking Longboats, manned by slave girls, all the way down to the Ottoman Empire, using their galleys to dominate the Mediteranean, manning their ships with Greek, Bulgarian, Wallachian, Arabic and Spanish slave girls.

Well since all my fantasies are Medieval or earlier this one was pretty easy.

All 3.

And let's see since I have Italo\Greco, West Asian and Middle Eastern DNA in me, I fit a lot of the girls that could have been enslaved.

Didn't the Vikings row their own Longboats ??
Big burly, bearded brutes....grunting rhythmically at the Oars,hell-bent on raping, pillaging, and drinking fine mead .

On the same note, people... what is your favorite era for a galley slavery fantasy? Of course, they cannot be fully historically accurate, since the idea of galley slavery and especially female galley slavery is rather a fantasy, but I will lay down a few examples:

4. Colonial Era. Colonial empires using slave girls for their galleys. Pirates using captured women. Huge naval battles, where the overseers are manning the cannons while the slave girls put their back into it, trying to get their galley out of the range of the enemy cannons.

5. The Current Times or even The Future. After some supposed series of disasters (perhaps a nuclear war), large sections of the world are thrown back into the Middle Ages. In order to save up on the expensive and rare oil, the modern ships are often replaced by galleys manned by slave girls that were once just usual women, going to college, posting on Cruxforums in the evening and all that.

Ummmm ... is it permissible to select all of the above? Or will that just get me whipped and tied to the ram on the bow

Struggle or no struggle, you must realize, you are destined to become our slave girls. There are only so many places where you can run on an island, and the crew has all the time to wait you out.

Yikes! A hunt. We northern girls have a few tricks. The annual linkie hunt has taught us well. Scatter girls, and rendezvous at the secret spot on the far side of the quagmire swamps. We’ll have lunch together while we watch our pursuers founder and drown.

Ah... mere barbarian tactics. No match for the devotion of our crew and our superior technology. But you should know, that I am not completely without mercy. Surrender now, and I will spare you the lashing of my whip... at least for the first days on my ship.
