Clearly, evidence of female galley slaves was suppressed by the Victorians because the stories and images "induced unseemly prurient excitation" among the male population...and some of the female population as well.
It is our duty to restore the history of those women who suffered at the oars.

Having an all Catholic school education does have some advantages. I remember reading an article in college written by a priest who claimed that women were crucified FACING the cross for modesty reasons. Yeah right.
I'm sure HE believed that because of his morals but we have to remember a great deal of the history we read has been sanitized (when you see the word "handmaiden" in the bible it means SLAVE GIRL) or is baseless conjecture ('they did it this way') based on personal biases. The amount of original material still in existence is a tiny fraction of all the material that seems to have been written (based on existing materials referencing other materials) and even then every time a work gets copied (or worse translated) by hand "corrections" (intentional and otherwise) creep in.
And as far as the Victorian's were concerned "image" was FAR more important than 'reality'.
