I read somewhere that the Romans cut the hair of female slaves short, a visual marker of their status or lack thereof. So what we have here is a slave, probably from one of the German tribes.

I wonder what she did to get herself in this world of hurt.

It has been said by the History Channel that the Germans drove Spartacus nuts; they would gather to his group take food, lodging, and training with the main group then when they found a German leader they would splinter off saying they wanted to have their own German group and do their own German thing. In almost every case they only succeeded in weakening the main group because, in going off on their own they would encounter a Roman Army who destroyed them.
The point being that it is highly likely she would be German and one who was involved in a group that killed a Roman at the time of her escape. In cases involving the killing of a Roman crucifixion was the only punishment.
So with that here are the next three pictures.
Enjoy,
Helmut.

Yes, please keep them coming. I want to see that rebellious German slave hang on a cross.

Not that I have anything against Germans. One of my best friends is German. ;-)

Ich habe nichts gegen die Deutschen entweder.

Or in English: I have nothing against Germans either.
Now for the next three and by the way I've been doing these as we go.
Enjoy,
Helmut

Thank you for your input, comments are always appreciated.

The next few pictures have captions; while "A picture is worth a thousand words." This time I thought a few words would do much to show how little these men cared about what they were doing. Life was unimaginably cheep in ancient times and to a squad of soldiers (The Romans called it a tent.) this was just another job. The one thing they could have liked about it is that when Roman Legionaries were not fighting they did heavy construction work, it kept them in shape and out of trouble. Building roads, cutting and hauling wood, and digging to build fortifications were only a few of the things they did so doing light duty such as a crucifixion would have been a break for them. It also occurs to me that they might have tended to drag it out as much as possible, since the next job might be harder.
Enjoy,
Helmut

You might want to continue to read the captions in these three. Generally I like my pictures to tell the story without words, but once in a while I don't mind the extra work.

If anyone has wondered where my picture stories come from there are several sources. Some I get from other peoples stories, others come from my imagination, and others come from the TV. (Like Xena). The one thing that has never happened is that while I have dreamed about whipping scenes I have never had a dream about a crucifixion and that"s probably why I am inclined to stay away from out and out snuff scenes in my pictures. I use nails because they are easier to work with then rope. I like to imagine that some of my female characters eventually are freed from their crosses and live to tell about their experience; rope fits that outcome much better then would the puncture wounds from nails.
Hope you enjoy,
Helmut

Nice series, Helmut.
I believe you're right about the attitude of Roman soldiers. They were trained to think very little of the lives of anyone outside of the legion. They were rough, harsh types mostly recruited from the lower classes & their loyalty was to their comrads first, their officers second (if said officer stayed on their good side), the Emperor & Rome last & only so long as they were kept happy. As more non-Italians were recuited, the loyalty ended with their tribal leader. The Legionaires built the Empire & they ultimatly caused it's downfall.
You're also right about all the construction work. Some historians think Hadrian's Wall may have had less to do with defence & more to do with keeping the troops busy in the dreary far north of Britain.
While we're on the subject of recruiting outside of Italy, I'm curious about the Sargent's accent. I wasn't aware the Roman's had a recuiting office Brooklyn.

I love humor! Thank you.
I thought only to impart his membership in the Plebeian lower classes. Probably the illegitimate son of another Legionary who died in some distant and forgotten campaign and who in his turn joined the Legion so he wouldn't a burden to his impoverished mother; or maybe he just knocked someone up.
As far as Brooklyn is concerned I have never been there, I am not familiar with their accent so I'll take your word for it.
Hope you are enjoying this as much as I am,
Helmut

Here are the next three pictures in this series, there are going to be more but as you can see we are almost finished. Soon it will be time to begin thinking about a new story. Any suggestions???
Enjoy,
Helmut

As you can see this is not the end but we're getting close. I have six more renders ready to go after these, but that should do it. So the question is where do we go next??? I was hoping someone would come up with a good idea, for example the idea to do an alternate ending to the Dune theme came from one a good friend and fan apostate630. As I've said before comments and suggestions are always welcome.
Enjoy,
Helmut

Thank you, Helmut! I have enjoyed this crucifixion and cross-lifting sequence. You do have a very good skill at choosing excellent points-of-view that help tell the crux stories.

Yusebby's praise is impressive indeed. Doesn't surprise me, though

Helmut, you're one of the pioneers of crux art. And still one of the doggone best.
