Ummmm … I thought I might weigh in with a few personal thoughts. These are my thoughts as a member, not as a mod.
I have been a donator over the years and will continue to be one as long as I remain a member. But I don’t believe that cash donations should in any way be required of members. I value the diversity and openness of Forums membership to a wide variety of interested individuals, whatever their contributions … whether it be art, writing, monetary donations, commentary or simply appreciative viewing or commenting. I think I would be opposed to a conversion of the site to a paid membership only basis, and would probably leave if that were to be implemented.
I think it’s also important to keep in mind that Imagemaker has kept this site open and free to everyone for a good number of years almost exclusively with funding from his own sources, and it’s our present day changing world and economy that has prompted the recent need to seek more financial support from members.
And yes, I would agree that some of the material that appears is repetitive or marginal in quality or interest, but I hate to see the site constraining and censoring material beyond enforcing the guidelines set down in our rules. We all have different tastes, but let’s leave it to the staff to decide, as it already does, whether a particular line of postings or new threads are out of line and in need of policing.
Finally, I see nothing wrong with listing donors by screen name, with their permission, as a way of acknowledging their financial help. But if that were to be done, I would not want to see a monthly list, as some donors, like myself, give generously on an irregular or periodic basis rather than monthly. But again, any listing should appear as grateful acknowledgment along with recognition of the fact that members who contribute mainly their art and prose are making important contributions too.
