I Will Be Dropping Off For A While .................

Right now is a good time to come to Florida. You can join the other pasty white tourist at the beach.

But, no beer.
Only two hurricanes this year, and the season is days from ending (and it ALWAYS ends on schedule). Some of the beaches may not be there, though. Go to Arizona or Claifornia instead, and there is not ENOUGH water (but the fires from a distance are beautiful).

Just off for a fortnight or so on holiday, my first since 2019. Hoping to get a bit more sun than a very wet England. See you all soon, I hope.
Have a great trip, old bean.
Great example of the kind of idiotic discourse that goes on here at CF. Let’s try to raise the bar a bit, shall we?
You’re asking @montycrusto to raise the bar??? Seriously???? Come back to reality, Barb!

Funny you should mention California and Arizona- I’ve just finished a 2 week holiday here, now waiting for my flight home from Phoenix. The weather’s been terrific, and the fires are out! It’s a beautiful part of America, especially this time of year…

I grew up in southern Arizona (the north is entirely different). I loved the desert (I hope you got to go to the Phoenix Zoo or the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, both of which enhance the natural history of the desert). There are now way too many people (a "native" used to be someone who had moved there a couple of years ago before the newcomers trashed the place). Much of the desert has been bulldozed over, and clearly there is an escalating water crisis (I once spent a day in the restricted area just downstream from Hoover Dam helping my youngest brother with his thesis). The saguaro cactus is a unique tree which grows (slowly--they don't bloom or get arms until they are 75 or so) only in southern Arizona and northern Sonora in Mexico and has a special kind of photosynthesis which conserves water. There is a national park dedicated specifically to them. The high mountains in the south preserve "cloud forests", with pines and unique animals, which are basically cut off by the desert below. The mountains host telescopes--specifically Kitt Peak on Indian land. The University of Arizona in Tucson has a huge astronomy department. I hesitate to go back there and see all the places I remember covered with development. Cochise County in the south east is one of the birding hot spots in the country--notably a dozen or so species of humming bird--because of the proximity to tropical Mexico and Central America. There was a native parrot, which is now extinct in Arizona. During the "monsoon" in July and August one can get "haboobs" (some narrow-minded people object to the Arabic word)--huge clouds of thick, blowing dust hundreds of feet high which cover everything.
Then there is General Sherman. "Too damned hot and dry. Now, General, all she needs is a little less heat, a little more water, and a few good citizens. That's all hell needs."

Back now, and what better than a CF Limerick?

Old Slave went to Spain
Boy, was it a pain
Forget the sights
And the bull fights
All he saw was rain.

Is this brown tinge on my face a sun tan or rust?

The rain in Spain stays mainly on Old Slave!
… By George, she's got it!
… By George, she's got it!
Now, once again where does it rain?
… On Old Slave! On Old Slave!
… And where's that soggy Slave?
… In Spain! In Spain!

in the coming days I will be attempting for the holidays to fly from the American Midwest to the West Coast (or the Left Coast as one of my conservative family members likes to call it).

Given the blizzard, frigid temperatures and extremely high wind storm warnings blanketing the country (thanks Canada), I’ll be very lucky if my flight doesn’t get canceled. But in the unlikely event that I do reach my destination, I will be dropping off for awhile (or only looking in occasionally).

Happy Holidays to everyone here on CruxForums!

Enjoy your Holidays, Barb! :zplayita:
Just be careful not to accidentally board a plane to Arkansas, in the bad visibility of the blizzard,

Sounds like you'd do best to hitch a ride with a funny old guy in a red coat driving a heavily-laden, reindeer-hauled, flying sleigh!

Have a very happy, peaceful Christmas - Pacific or otherwise :xmas:
