Judicial Corporal Punishment Of Women: Illustrations

Here are images illustrating four different implementations of the pillory for women in Germany. All images by M. Henze circa 1900 from the books of Rudolf Quanter (who published several books about the history of judicial punishments in Germany, including at least two about punishments for immorality -- no full copies online I think, so I'm not sure whether they're serious historical tomes or more in the Nell In Bridewell style).

Here is a whore being paraded through the streets on a donkey facing the tail, stripped to the waist:



Two men and a woman at the pillory, with neck irons, humiliating masks and forced to carry "Lastersteine" ("stones of sin"):



A whore at the pillory, forced to wear a straw crown to indicate her lost virginity and honour:



A double punishment of two lovers: the man is receiving a public flogging ("Staupenschlag") with a bundle of birches while above him his lover is publicly exhibited in a cage mounted on top of the whipping post. No idea whether they are forced to swap over once they've finished flogging him:

Further to my previous conversationg with @montycrusto about the art of Nikolay Bessonov (aka Tibool), I have just come across a stash of 94(!) pictures by Bessonov/Tibool, most of them depicting historical judicial punishments of women in Germany, mainly corporal but also some capital punishments and judicial torture. They were commissioned by and reproduced at the website of a private museum on medieval German justice situated in Castle Wolkenstein in Saxony. There is some overlap with the four galleries I posted before.

Oops - one of the pictures I've just posted wasn't from the Wolkenstein museum site, but was meant to go with my previous post of old illustrations of women at the pillory in Germany. Here are more of those:



A particular theme here is the use of the Schandmaske (Mask of Shame). These were similar to a brank or scold's bridle, but the main purpose was not so much as a gag (I'm not sure if some of these incorporated a gag) but to visibly humiliate the wearer by showing a face matching their particular crime. Pig's snouts were very popular for this purpose. Mostly used on women, and mostly for adultery, immorality or for being a "house dragon" or scold, i.e. for speaking their mind. Mother and daughter brought to the square to be publicly whipped and afterwards to ride the wooden horse until sunset.

I love this - I imagine this is what many Jewish women looked like shortly before being crucified during the siege of Jerusalem. With their heads covered.
