21st December...The Pagan festival of the Sun God,otherwise known as the Winter Solstice.
Incidentally in the,Northern Hemisphere 21st Dec. is also the shortest day of the year. :)

Sure! We cannot blame the average caveman (m/f), convinced that the earth is flat and satnding in the middle of the Universe (which is limited in size to the blue yonder), having no notion of what such a thing as a tilted planet axis brings about, being scared as hell that these shortening days will keep on shortening, unless some big effort is made to enlighten their universe! So, make fires, and hang as much as possible candles in the trees, to chase away darkness! And bloody, hell, every year, it surprisingly worked! Darkness was chased away, and the days lengthened again! :sun_smiley:
 
I have to check the Christmas tree lights today as it's the shortest day of the year.
