Monday in the US is Memorial Day where we pause to remember those how fought for our freedom and are no longer with us.

Thank God for the great generation that would not let these wrongs stand.

Best not to forget them on any day. I see the veterans on Remembrance Day, and I think 'Could I have done that?'

I guess you do what you have to do, but I count myself fortunate never to have been expected to pick up a gun and point it at someone

Memorial Day began as Decoration Day, a day to honor those who had died on both sides in the US Civil War. The name came from the tradition of "decorating" the graves on that day. Later, it was expanded to include those who died in all the wars the US has fought.

My father enlisted after high school at the end of WWII. He never saw combat & after doing occupation duty in the Phillipines & Korea, he was sent home. He went to college - on the GI Bill, the first of his family to do so - met my mom & settled in Florida. Like all the men discharged at the end of the War before they had completed their "hitch", he was official in the Army Reserves. When the Korean War broke out, most of the men who faught were reservists recalled to active duty, including some who had served with my father. My father, however, never got a notice. Years later, he mentioned this to his mother - a semi-literated, tobacco chewing, Virginia hillybilly woman. She told him: "You got some letter from the Army. I just tossed it in the wood stove.":)

...and today she would have risked a fine greater from the EPA for burning it than him not responding to it...

a caring mother isn't:devil:;)

My father got luck twice. His unit would have been one of the ones taking part in the invasion of Japan. The Japanese surrendered kept him out of that. then, my grandmother kept him out of Korea.

I got luck when the Vietnam war ended while I was still in highschool.

My nephew is in the Reserves & attending East Tennessee State under the ROTC program. He'll be regular Army officer when he graduates. We're hoping the family luck continues.

Happy Memorial Day everybody.

Your Viet Nam experience was similar to mine. I drew a good number...

To all those not as fortunate as Naraku and me I tip a straw hat and thank you for the freedoms we have because of your sacrifices...

Cancer child's secret message on back of her mirror found by dad after she died

A young girl who was dying of cancer left a heart-rending 3,000-word message hidden on the back of her mirror.
Just days after 12-year-old Athena Orchard's death last Wednesday, Athena’s dad Dean was stunned to discover the long note written in marker pen.
The message was penned after Athena was diagnosed with cancer following her discovery of a tiny lump on her head last December.
Distraught Dean was unable to read to the end as his daughter gave her thoughts on life and approaching death.
Athena wrote: “Every day is special, so make the most of it.
“You could get a life-ending illness tomorrow so make the most of every day. Life is only bad if you make it bad.”

Last Christmas, Athena collapsed at home in Leicester and the family feared there was something seriously wrong.
She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and had chemotherapy for cancer in her spine, her left shoulder and her head.
She also had to have a seven-and-a-half-hour operation to remove the tumor on her spine and wore a wig to cover her hair-loss.
Despite these traumas, Athena’s note showed an unshakably positive outlook on life.
She wrote: “Happiness depends upon ourselves.
“Maybe it’s not about the happy ending, maybe it’s about the story.
“The purpose of life is a life of purpose.”
Dean, 33, said: “It was a stand-up mirror in her room, and it was always leaned up against the wall so we never saw behind it.
“She never mentioned it, but it’s the kind of thing she’d do.
“She was a very spiritual person. She’d go on about stuff that I could never understand - she was so clever.
When I moved the mirror after she died I couldn’t believe it – I saw all this writing. It must have been about 3,000 words.
“It’s so touching. When I first saw it, it just blew me away.
“I started reading it but before long I had to stop because it was too much, it was heartbreaking.”
Athena, who leaves behind six sisters and three brothers, wrote:
“I’m waiting to fall in love with someone I can open my heart to.Love is not about who you can see spending your future with. It’s about who you can’t see spending your life without. “Life is a game for everyone but love is the only prize.”

EXCERPTS FROM ATHENA’S MESSAGE:
“Happiness depends upon ourselves."

“Maybe it’s not about the happy ending, maybe it’s about the story."

“The purpose of life is a life of purpose."

“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra."

"Happiness is a direction not a destination."

“Thank you for existing. Be happy, be free, believe, forever young."

“Love is rare, life is strange, nothing lasts and people change."

“Every day is special, so make the most of it. You could get a life-ending illness tomorrow so make the most of every day."
