long before the Kingdom of the Netherlands came into existence,
though as Admi says, Holland is a part (two regions) of the modern kingdom.
It's hoek-land 'spur-land', referring to the Hook of Holland (Hoek van Holland)
Holland is also the name of one of the Ridings of Lincolnshire, with Boston as its chief town,
and there are several English villages with the same or similar name.
