January 20th - St Agnes Eve

Swaish St Agnes Eve.jpg

These let us wish away,
And turn, sole-thoughted, to one Lady there,
Whose heart had brooded, all that wintry day,
On love, and wing'd St. Agnes' saintly care,
As she had heard old dames full many times declare.

They told her how, upon St. Agnes' Eve,
Young virgins might have visions of delight,
And soft adorings from their loves receive
Upon the honey'd middle of the night,
If ceremonies due they did aright;
As, supperless to bed they must retire,
And couch supine their beauties, lily white;
Nor look behind, nor sideways, but require
Of Heaven with upward eyes for all that they desire.

I hope our American members are not suffering too much with the current snow storm?

Thirty years ago, on the 28th of January 1986 : the space shuttle Challenger explodes, 73 seconds after launch, killing all 7 crew.
It's astonishing that this happened 30 years ago! It seems just like just a few years ago and was one of those events when you remember where you were and what you were doing when the news broke...

I was working in a insurance company customer service center - not the same insurance company I work for today - and one of the reps shouted that a customer told him they just saw the shuttle blow up. This rep was an Hungarian immigrant, so we all assumed he just misunderstood or meant to say it was launched. But, he insisted the customer said it had blown up. Someone else turned on a portable radio and we heard the news. Later, a TV was wheeled in from a conference room so we could all see the reports.

My brother was driving to work. On clear days you could see Shuttle launches from Tampa. He saw this strange cloud in the East. He knew the shuttle was launching, but this didn't look right. By the time he got to work, it was all over the radio.

I agree with Darkprincess, hard to believe it's been 30 years.
