Early in the morning on Halloween, 1941, just weeks before Pearl Harbor, the United States Ship Reuben James, an old four-stack destroyer screening a convoy, was sunk off Iceland by the U-552. The boozing, womanizing head of the US Navy, Admiral Ernest J. King, realized that the Navy was already at war, and swore off booze for the duration.
He did slide back at least once. After D-Day, he and the other American service chiefs were waiting in Churchill's private railroad car for a meeting. The destroyer carrying Churchill back from an inspection of the new front was diverted and thus delayed at the PM's insistence so it could shell Nazi positions in France. King got into the PM's sherry.

When Boudicca's forces entered Londininium in 61 CE, any British women found living with Romans, were nailed to the doors of their houses, their breasts were cut off and sewed to their lips. Or so the story goes.
Of course it might just be Roman propaganda.
