My girlfriend at the time, Kathy Mezza, died when the second tower collapsed. That was a terrible time for me. I called the Nassau County Police Department every evening for almost two months. They already knew me by name. The worst thing is that there isn't even a grave. Her status to this day is "missing".
"RIP Kathy Messa"
:(
I can't even imagine what you've been through dear @Hugin&Munin. I hope she's in a better world.

Ah my friend, I'm so sorry for your loss.
Peace be with you.

RIP Kathy Messa.

I wish that I had the words to say how sorry I am.

On 15 September 2008, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, triggering an ongoing financial chaos. The real causes of the crisis (which in fact began to be felt as early as 2007) are still being sought. However, there is no way it was due to the neoliberal policies adopted in the 1980s and matured in the 1990s, these are malicious rumours still spread today by Keynes fanatics.

Too much greed perhaps? SEC not minding the store?

I agree. "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." 1 Timothy 6:10.
It's so interesting to see that a nation built by Puritans get obsessed with the myth of infinite growth in a finite system.

Maybe I am overstepping, or just jelaous of those who were born in the 50s in the West, but nowadays it seems that neoliberalism has done more harm than good. I believe it's a flawed economic model that primarily benefits the wealthy while leaving most people worse off. From what I've seen, it's led to greater inequality, less job security, and weaker public services. I'm particularly concerned about how it's contributed to environmental degradation and economic instability. While proponents tout its focus on free markets and growth, I think this narrow view ignores the broader impacts on society and individual well-being. In my opinion, we need an economic approach that balances growth with social responsibility and environmental sustainability. Unfortunately though, to quote the great late Mark Fisher: It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.

Not that cynical actually :nusee:
Okay, another good one for us: "What Darwin was too polite to say, my friends, is that we came to rule the earth not because we were the smartest, or even the meanest, but because we have always been the craziest, most murderous motherfuckers in the jungle." Stephen King - The Cell

In the UK,September 15th is known universally as "Battle of Britain Day".
In recognition of the bravery of the RAF pilots, who thwarted Hitler's once-mighty Luftwaffe during the Summer of 1940.

Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States is 100 years old today. He is not only the longest lived US president by quite a few years, but, I think, the longest lived of any world leader. Whatever one thinks of his presidency, he spent his "retirement" doing good works, whether building houses for Habitat for Humanity or trying to make peace and further human rights all around the world, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. A truly amazing life by any standard. Happy Birthday, Jimmy!

One better goes into show business to become a centennial. I recall Bob Hope, George Burns, Olivia de Havilland, Hall Roach, Kirk Douglas, Irving Berlin, Vera Lynn and Leni Riefenstahl to name a few.
Not really 'world leaders', but notoriuos were Queen Mother Elizabeth and Joao Havelange.
