In the Ardennes Mountains (Belgium and Northern France), the word 'chantoire' designates a place where a river vanishes into a karst cave, particularly when it runs downward into the cave. The sound of the running water and its echoe coming from the deep,, reminds to the sound of a woman singing, deep below. Hence the particular feminine gender and writing of the word on this occasion (the basic word 'chantoir' is masculin).
