Interesting, these pseudo-Classical quotes. I was checking only last night
for one supposed to have been said by Socrates about the youth of his day,
that makes them sound much like teenagers today - it's often quoted -
turns out it was likewise a 20th century invention.
Same applies to the 'old Chinese curse' about 'interesting times'.

We have a completely biased view of what conflicts can be, because of the Greeks. Phalanx against phalanx, it was mainly a contestt of strenght, like in a melee. The losing side just fled the battlefield and the winners refrained from slaughtering 'too much'. Trained free men were a scarce ressource, in Ancient Greece...

There's very well a severe self-centeredness in that, blindly following a ruleset that's assumed to be universal, proclaiming that system to be literally 'The End of History', and almost incapable of reacting sensibly or even being able to mentally parse the event, when other actors 'don't play by the rules'... whether those actors are other nation-states, non-state actors, or even massive segments of the population within 'The West'.
