I wouldn't be that cynical. I don't suppose all the Templars - or members of any religious orders - were wholly faithful to their vows, but there was a strong belief in a very real and nasty place called Hell, and even in this world, dishonour was something the knightly classes did fear, with good reason -
and of course reliable contraception didn't exist until much more recently, however attractive a noble knight might be, the stakes for women were dangerously high.

Well, this is not a real problem: The Catholic Church "Sacrament of Penance" allows anyone to confess their sins and to be absolved by God through the administration of a Priest in the rite of “Penance and Reconciliation". The only requirement was to get a friendly, understanding Priest.

Looking to earn a living, net worth only slightly over £40 million

It'll cost Canada C$1.7 million a year for their security. I'm sure the CFers in the Great White North will be glad to foot the bill.

But will they make you change your national seal?

unfortunately, while ordinary lay-folk might just expect a long, hard stint in Purgatory, which could, as you say, be at least reduced by penance, and more so by indulgences, a member of a religious order who broke their vow was committing a mortal sin and had to do some serious stuff like founding a hospital or building a chapel for masses to be offered to keep their soul out of Hell.

"Sobald der Gülden im Becken klingt im huy die Seel im Himmel springt"
"As soon a coin in the bowl rings, a soul from purgatory springs."

Johann Tetzel's sale of indulgences in Germany to help fund the building of St. Peter's in Rome, help precipitate the Protestant Reformation.
