Possibly by today`s standards , but that did not prevent us from thoroughly enjoying it. Personally, I spent Christmas 1954 in the Army in the Canal Zone in Egypt, but things at home started to improve in the 50s after being pretty Spartan during the 40s, when we had to make the most of whatever we had.In Scotland, Christmas wasn't even a public holiday until 1958 - Hogmanay (New Year) was.
And meat was rationed throughout the UK until 1954.
So I think it was a bit dour for my grandparents.
Probably a lot more so across Continental Europe ...
