He gets multiple 21 gun salutes in most major US cities almost daily. Not something that I can get very excited about but I've just heard that Gaston Glock, inventor of that gun, has died @ 94.

Scathing political humor as well as anti war criticisms.Tom Smothers was the one on the left.

I’d be astonished if anyone outside the U. S. has ever heard of the Smothers Brothers, the faux folk singing duo that really broke ground while baiting network censors into canceling their show.
He. Will. Be. Missed.
V for valkyr v for Valhalla
They were all dead. The final gunshot was an exclamation mark on everything that had led to this point. I released my finger from the trigger, and it was over.
I was ten years old when their show was cancelled. Did not understand the reason then- it would be considered mild today. May he rest in peace.Tom Smothers of the Smothers Brothers passed at 86
From what I remember is they made fun of Nixon as well as the war and that pissed off Johnson and those were driving forces behind it.I was ten years old when their show was cancelled. Did not understand the reason then- it would be considered mild today. May he rest in peace.
1967 through 1970 ('68 was probably the worst) were not happy times in this country, and literally everyone was affected in one way or another. The Smothers Bros. and other celebs poked the hornets nest over the Vietnam war and paid the price for it. It was typical of the times, and the deep divide in this country now reminds of those times when everyone seemed to be at each others throats over something. I actually felt fortunate not hearing about it every day while in Southeast Asia and then Germany for 2 years. Somewhere along the way people in this country have come to believe that anyone with a different opinion is a mortal enemy.... again. It makes me very sad that we haven't learned anything in the last 50 years. From what I remember is they made fun of Nixon as well as the war and that pissed off Johnson and those were driving forces behind it.
Was an odd time to be a youngster in for sure but I was a bit too young to realize the full effects of what was happening until later.1967 through 1970 ('68 was probably the worst) were not happy times in this country, and literally everyone was affected in one way or another. I would agree, and add 1970 as well. At least for the muscle cars. Was an odd time to be a youngster in for sure but I was a bit too young to realize the full effects of what was happening until later.
Those were peak years for most automotive design, IMHO.
Yes indeed. But it’s an unfortunate truism that the more things change…
Yes, I am partial to the late 60s but early 70s had their gems, too…almost the last hurrah for the breed.would agree, and add 1970 as well. At least for the muscle cars.
I. Had. Never. Seen. That. One. Before. They started as real folk musicians but their banter between songs was more popular than their music so they became a comedy act.
Their father, Major Thomas B Smothers Jr, died while a POW of the Japanese during WWII.
My best female New York friend is deeply involved in Starsky & Hutch fandom, and today she's pretty deeply bummed out.
He was such a great player that I was able to forgive him when Saint-Etienne lost to his Bayern team in 1976 (Hampden Park, Glasgow, 0-1). Hats off to you, "Kaiser"!Franz Beckenbauer (1945-2024). Former German football player. Nicknamed 'Der Kaiser', he became world champion with the West-German team as player (1974) and coach (1990).
