Why do we place it in 1791? It is unlikely. In France, torture was abolished in 1786 and the invention of the guillotine was a more "humanitarian" way of executing prisoners than the broken wheel. Perhaps the Countess of La Rochelle had the bad luck that Revolutionary Court was chaired by sadistic judges and cruel fans of old execution procedures.
