Getting a few sips like this girl who is forced to thrust her upper body (and her lovely boobies) forward to reach the proffered dripping rag (probably sour wine and piss -- she doesn't care so horrible her thirst at this point) is a very pathetic/erotic scene. She's just being fucked with in this image. Can't get enough water to really slake her thirst or keep her alive longer. It‘s quite difficult for the executioners… how many water should they give? Of course great thirst is an important part of the torment. I guess only the strongest victims die of thirst on the cross - I expect the young ladies dying much earlier (what is a mess of course)…

Dehydration weakens the body and can cause all kinds of problems/organ failures.

If you want them to suffer as long as possible keep them watered if a regular schedule.

Also the ladies weigh a lot less what they maybe lack in strenght is offset by their wweight.

I like the idea of a regular schedule for watering the crucified with the aim of keeping them alive as long as possible before loss of blood/organ failure claims them. After all, it's meant to be a lengthy public execution with the condemned more or less conscious the entire time -- at least a day I would think for an otherwise healthy person. Add some salt to the water to replenish electrolytes. Even ancient peoples understood the importance of salt in the diet (or did they?) even if they didn't know why it was so important. Sweaty skin tasted salty so something important to health was being lost.

Some might refuse water, despite their overwhelming thirst, fully aware it was keeping them alive. Force them to drink, if possible. Also, an excessive scourging might nearly kill the condemned, so go a bit lighter with the whip if time on the cross is the goal.

I heard about the fact that the water for the crucified was mixed with pain-reliefing herbes… that would have also extended the duration of the spectacle on the cross…
