I need to repost this one.
I first saw these at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The first time this former altar boy saw Jesus crucified naked.
These are not by Michelangelo, but by one of his students. I wonder if the Inquisition burned him at the stake.

There's a backstory. Pompey The Great got his "Great" designation by suppressing the Cilician Pirates, who in the mid-first century B.C. devastated commerce in the Mediterranean.
Crassus defeated the Spartacus revolt, and in the aftermath crucified 6,000 rebellious slaves along the Via Appia.
Pompey negotiated with the pirates, and found they were pirating because they had no other way to make a living.
He granted them lands upon which they could become farmers. The pirates accepted.
Pirate problem over.

The men have all been crucified. These are what's left. The wives, the daughters, the sisters. I don't want to think what happened to the children.

My thoughts are with DeMullotto and his family. Lots.
I treasure the manip he made for me, which I've posted a lot. A young woman dying naked and in agony by a Roman roadside, and the sight is so commonplace that passersbys don't even linger to watch.
