Just one little note here.
If you are torturing for the entertainment of the crowd, shouldn't the victims be facing OUTWARD instead of inward in a circle.
I mean if I'm going to be the show I might as well see my audience.

Excellent point, Willow. But recall that most of the hundreds of arenas across the Roman Empire were cozier affairs than the Colosseum. The ladies in the illustration in question are facing a portion of their audience.

Alice Kiss has been for over a decade a muse and template for crux manip artists. But two other Makar models, Oxana and Torturo, were IMHO even better at conveying pure and unfiltered pain.

If you look carefully, you can just make out the diagonal pattern of the rope marks on her right wrist.
Therefore, I suggest this is the 'after' smile.
