I rather think they would have thought that a horse was worth 20 female slaves.

I think it depends on who wants what. Say the guy with the horse really wants the blond slave girl. He goes and asks about it, and suddenly she's worth two horses. In this case, we have a guy lucky enough to own several slave girls, but he's convinced he needs a horse. Who can fathom the Oriental mind?
