Uplifting Thoughts for the Isolated and Depressed in Times of Plague

Having just mentioned the duduk in Emarukk's thread, the instrument he (sometimes) lets me play as a slavegirl,
here's some traditional Armenian music featuring the sound of that instrument

I know there are varied opinions of Wagner here. However, one of the very first classical records I purchased back in the mid-sixties was of Bruno Walter conducting the Brahms Academic Festival Overture and Wagner, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg - Overture. I reveled at playing them at high volume on my new KLH Hi-Fi! My tastes in music have evolved over the years to a broader range, but I still feel an uplifting thrill hearing the orchestra (in this Recording, my beloved Philadelphia Orchestra) when the coda Screen Shot 2020-09-28 at 9.53.57 AM.pngbegins (@ about 8:50) and you hear the power and majesty that a great Symphony Orchestra can deliver!

Maybe to others, this won't be uplifting, but to me it is. A true Pantheon of Rock superstars - Bob Dylan, Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and more (we've lost George and Tom and Bob just turned 80). Don't miss Clapton's little guitar solo at 2:00 - incredible!

I remember hearing this song first in my late teens. But I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

Crimson flames tied through my ears, rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon, " said I, proud 'neath heated brow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth, "rip down all hate, " I screamed
Lies that life is black and white spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Girls' faces formed the forward path from phony jealousy
To memorizing politics of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists, unthought of, though somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now

A self-ordained professor's tongue too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty is just equality in school
"Equality, " I spoke the word as if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand at the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy in the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats, mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms quite clear, no doubt, somehow

Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now

'not available' in UK :(

I don't think many of us in Scotland were aware that the first broadcast performance of what has become our National Anthem was performed by Ronnie Browne and Roy Williamson (who at that time, 1968, comprised The Corries) playing a bouzouki and a bodhran drum:

It was more of a lament in that version, I think Roy WIlliamson added the more 'uplifting' stanza later:

Those days are past now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again
That stood against him
Proud Edward's Army
And sent him homeward tae think again

Today we've learnt that bouzouki has been bought and added to Edinburgh University's splendid collection of historic musical instruments:

A beautiful piece of music, Jacques Offenbach - Barcarolle. The style named for the boats, "barca" of the Venetian gondoliers. Listen as the soft 6/8 time is reminiscent of the rhythm of the gondolier's stroke.

When I was older, my favorite version, and my favorite Byrds song, was "My Back Pages." I never bothered to listen to any other version. But after listening to this, and reading the lyrics, I'm younger than that now.
