You are right, it is just inverting the picture. But the point is that it shows the execution from a totally different angle of view, not only physically, but also mentally. It shows the apparently unnatural position of the inverted body parts, the terror on the faces, the reddening of the head and upper limbs and chest. Imagine being one of them.
