Hum, for me, to be entirely nailed to the cross before raising is the first part of a process intending to show to the condemned that he (she) is totally fixed and having not any possibility to escape !
It's, in my opinion (and fantasy) the first stade of a crucifixion ...
The raising of the cross is also a great moment because it makes slowly discover by the victim what he (she) could have like horison for the future ...
And when the cross is falling down into its hole , it's like a birth, the birth of the end, the birth of the death that he (she) only can delay the expiration ...
but, just my opinion ...;)

There is one more way, as taught us the great Markus:
;)

C'est pas gentil ...:(
(It's not gentle )

I was taught the closer English translation is "That's not nice." But evil head games are neither gentle nor nice, so either way you are correct.

And I won’t do that anymore. Promise. ;)

In my imagination, that drop into the hole is a symbol of finality. It marks the completion of all of the violent torture of the whipping and nailing, which was all done to her by others. From this point on, she will torture herself by trying to hang by her wrists, holding herself up on her feet until she can't bear the pain any longer, struggling and writhing, forcing herself to endure the sedile or cornu. Now there is desperation, hopelessness, fear, panic, terror, all inside of her, all coming from her mind, inspired by what her executioners have done to her. Before, she had life to look forward to, but from this point on she has begun to slowly die, her strength running out drop by drop.

Good description!

I really like this description Messaline. The idea of affixing the condemned to the cross by feet and wrists before it is raised kind of gives the cross the notion of being her ‘throne.’ Sort of a mockery that adds a mental pleasure to the onlookers, but humiliation to the victim. In a way, it’s more of a refined way to crucify her (if the word ‘refined’ can even be used in the same sentence as ‘crucifixion’ ), whereas hoisting her up by her wrists alone makes her kick and squirm more violently. In truth, it seems to me that method 1 is more refined and designed for noteable victims (rebellion leaders, daughters or wives of enemy rulers,etc...) , and method 2 suits common rabble that are much more common, and would require a permanent stipes to be constructed. Moreover, the difference between the two kind of brings up the idea of dignified humiliation versus cruel humiliation. Thoughts?
