Yes Jastrow, I'm pretty much on your side about opera generally -A couple of pictures of the Verona arena and the set for their production of AIDA. It really is quite lovely. You have time for a nice dinner since they don't start until it is dark--around 9 p.m. as far north as they are. It is long however. I think we didn't get home until about 2:00 a.m. The Verona arena is large, however the outer ring of it was quarried for other building projects after the fall of Rome. It still is very impressive.
especially that dreadful Wagner with his screaming valkyries!
But the trionfo in Aida in the Verona Arena is so gloriously over the top,
it's got everything - dressage horses, politically incorrect little Moorish slave-boys,
il Ministero delle Sciocche Passeggiate (Ministry of Silly Walks), near naked dancing priestesses ...
a country that can put on a show like that can manage without a government!
