You have time for a nice dinner since they don't start until it is dark--around 9 p.m. as far north as they are. It is long however. I think we didn't get home until about 2:00 a.m. The Verona arena is large, however the outer ring of it was quarried for other building projects after the fall of Rome. It still is very impressive.

Yes Jastrow, I'm pretty much on your side about opera generally -
especially that dreadful Wagner with his screaming valkyries!
But the trionfo in Aida in the Verona Arena is so gloriously over the top,
it's got everything - dressage horses, politically incorrect little Moorish slave-boys,
il Ministero delle Sciocche Passeggiate (Ministry of Silly Walks), near naked dancing priestesses ...
a country that can put on a show like that can manage without a government! :D

 
I think the sort of spectacle provided by cheerleaders -
and all the paraphernalia of the triumphal procession in Aida -
are just the kind of show the Romans would have enjoyed -
soldiers with standards and gleaming weaponry,
marching bands, gladiators and wrestlers,
dancing girls, gymnasts and acrobats,
wild beasts, captives in chains, you name it....
and a good number of naked bodies writhing on crosses might
just have added a thrilling backdrop to the stimulating scene!

Are all those take downs legal? A fair few would be penalised heavily in both forms of rugby. And of course in American football the players wear all sorts of heavy protection, which probably encourages greater risk taking and violence.

In soccer the violence is usually off the field

Which raises an interesting question. Was there much crowd violence at the Roman games? I think I've read of rivalry between different groups of supporters in Constantinople in later centuries.

Pretty much all of those tackles were legal at the time they occurred. The NFL has recently banned certain moves, like using the head to tackle, out of the concerns Apostate has noted. In soccer, there was the infamous head butt delivered in the World Cup final by French star Zinedine Zidane to an Italian opponent. And the biting of an Italian player by Uruguay's Luis Suarez in another World Cup match (what is it about these Italians?).

Monday, March 5, 2018–Day 64: Yesterday Yupar posted a comment on another thread about how one of her favorite fantasies was that to being crucified between two lower class men (slaves or thieves). She mentioned that they were wearing loincloth. I did this rendering, appropriately titled, "Between The Thieves" in 2014. The men are naked, despite the pain they are feeling, their bodies are responding to the crucified queen’s exposed body with rather large erections. This response can only further humiliate the queen and add to her considerable shame. It must also be unpleasant and frustrating for the men to be exposed in this manner and to know that they can do absolutely nothing to satisfy their lewd desires. I’m sure the viewers of this scene can appreciate the predicament the three are enduring–shame on her part, desire that can never be fulfilled on their part. Each can only watch the other’s suffering as they all weaken and move towards the ultimate and inescapable conclusion.

Jas, I missed Between the Thieves when you first posted it. It’s an interesting companion piece to this one, that I call Junior, Mom, and Big Sister (that’s Dad's skull at the foot of Mom's Cross). I posted them on Obscene Display back in September, and noted at the time that on top of his indescribable degradation at hanging naked before the gods and Mom and Sis and everybody is the eewwww! exposure of his incestuous erection.

Between shrieks and groans he’s thinking Aw, man! All the guys said Mom and Sis were hot, but now everybody can see I think so too! Jeez!
