Which raises an interesting question. Was there much crowd violence at the Roman games?
Interesting question - there are, I think, references to violence among supporters of rival contestants in chariot races (the charioteers wore colours associated with different factions in the city of Rome), and it's hard to believe there wasn't similar over-heating when watching gladiators fight. And sex-workers did good trade in the entrance passages to the Colosseum. On the other hand, the violence in the arena seems to have functioned - or at least it was hoped by the wealthy classes who sponsored the games - as a way of containing and channeling the violence of the 'mob'.

Da Pompei provengono diverse testimonianze archeologiche relative all'avvenimento.

The scuffle between Pompeians and Nocerini was a riot that occurred in Pompeii in 59 BC, documented by a painting in a plebeian house in the ruins of Pompeii, preserved today in the National Archaeological Museum

Tacitus ( Annales , XIV, 17) recalls how in that year, during a gladiatorial show in the amphitheater of Pompeii, some differences broke out between the inhabitants of Pompeii and those of Nuceria Alfaterna. The former were actually still feeling the effects of the carving out of the colony of Nuceria ( 57 BC) to the disadvantage of nearby Pompeii, which had lost part of its agricultural land.

During the games, insults escalated to stone-throwing, and then to weapons. At the end of the riots it was mostly the Nucerians who had suffered worst, many of them were killed or returned home injured.

The emperor Nero brought the affair to the attention of the Roman Senate, and the closure of the Pompeian amphitheater for ten years was debated, as well as the dissolution of the (City?) Council. Senator Livineius Regulus, organizer of the games, and the others who had incited the disorder were exiled.

The closure of the stadium was then reduced to only two years, probably due to the intervention of Poppea, who apparently owned a villa in those parts (it is said to be the one found at Oplonti, in Torre Annunziata). Perhaps the Pompeii earthquake, 62BC, also influenced the decision.

From Pompeii there are several pieces archaeological evidence related to the event. The most famous is the fresco discovered in the House of Brawl in the Amphitheater, while graffiti from the House of Dioscuri also refers to what happened:

'Campani victoria una/cum Nucerinis peristis'

'O Campanians, in a single victory you perished with the Nucerians'

Tuesday, March 6, 2018–Day 65: (Only 300 more days in this year!) Here’s a new one, a rather grisly image of Karolynia, a poor woman who has been on the cross for several days and knows the end of her life is drawing near. The sedile between her legs has helped to support her body’s weight but has done so in a very painful manner. The rough edge of the wood has cut deeply into and painfully abraded the delicate cleft of her womanhood. They have made her to drink foul-tasting, brackish water to keep her hydrated and to prolong her suffering. Occasionally they will hurl a bucket of filthy water over her naked flesh to keep awake and aware of all that is happening to her. Adding to her shame is the fact that she has lost control of her bladder and bowels and she can no longer keep from soiling herself. The pain of being hung this way is bad enough, but there are other torments she must endure–the burning sun and the swarms of flies and biting insects have driven her nearly insane. She reeks of sweat and filth and the flies have found every festering wound and every source of moisture her body has produced. Her exposed flesh is now covered with their painful bites. She knows it won’t be long before her body becomes infested with maggots. And above, the carrion birds are circling, waiting for their turn to feed on the meat of her body . In her haze of agony, she desperately whispers a prayer to herself, "Dear God, I’m being eaten alive. Please...please let it end..."

Yep, she looks done for alright! Just a matter of time now.

Rather than "Karolynia on the Cross," I think of her as "Carol's Fly and Buzzard Alfresco Café."

A family-friendly eatery: "Bring the chicks and maggots!"

Wednesday, March 7, 2018–Day 66: From 2012, this is entitled "Convent Cellar".
"The mission of the convent was to save the souls of young women who had offended God by their wicked and wanton thoughts and deeds. They were brought to the dank, dark cellar of the convent and given first-hand knowledge of the terrible price He paid for their redemption and salvation. In the darkness, they would writhe in agony, suffering as He did on the cross. They would learn how abominable their actions were in His eyes. And when the pain became unendurable, they would pray for forgiveness. It did not come easily. One of the Sisters knelt beside her and ensured that the lesson was truly learned. As the girl on the cross pleaded for mercy, the Sister would pray for her salvation. She would continue her prayers for a long time. After all, the path of redemption is never easy..."

I would have pegged this as one of Sisters Julia or Mary Catherine's wet dreams. ;)

Thursday, March 8, 2018–Day 67: I generally don’t do many renderings outside of the classical/Roman era. I don’t have a wide variety of modern clothes or props and don’t want to spend the money to acquire them. But I did try to do one modern scene in 2011 and here’s the result. The girl is ok and it was interesting to try out some different methods of restraints on her. But I have to tell you, I think the guy in the leather pants looks like an escapee from a 1970's gay porn S&M flick. Talk about a porn-stache! "Attention Village People! One of the members of your band is missing...!"

How long does it take you to create an image like this?

Probably a couple of hours. The figures wouldn't take too long to pose but it might have taken a little longer to locate some of the props, such as the leather pants, whip, etc. Then again, in this one I didn't to the usual post-production work I often do such as adding whip marks, sunburn and bodily fluids.

Good heavens. There is a family resemblance. ;)
