Jollyrei has posted today, 5 July 2017, in his thread,
Filtered And Artistic Manips And Pictures Gallery, the latest variation of Alice, employing his established motif of the exhausted crucifix, derived from Makar's original photograph. The intrepid manipulator is blazing a trail in 'computer/fine art' interpretations of Alice, and the latest picture is a bold experiment in emulation of the visual style of artist, actor, comedian and singer Martin Mull. Jollyrei refers to
'...Martin Mull's paintings which do a collage-style mix of photo, painting, and black and white. I rather liked the style, so I tried a crux manip trying to capture that. Here the background is the Logan Botanical Gardens in Scotland...'
Mull's collages place black-and-white photographic figures against coloured backgrounds, rendered in a pop art style, precisely in the manner which Jollyrei has achieved here. Having previously portrayed Alice with her original companion, Koshka, and again with Makar's Sasha, he develops his theme by presenting Alice in the company of a crux model from an alternative studio. He has already united Alice with Welsh Webb's Shannon and Orchid's Katrina. Now we see her crucified with Arkady's Samantha, the solarised greyscale accents of both figures complimenting the virtual palette-knife treatment of a coloured background which is simultaneously bold and subdued.
As Jollyrei observes, Alice and Samantha are both memorable, expressive and dynamic crux models who have enjoyed extensive popularity with manipulators for many years. But this is a very different treatment from the usual manips. The contrast between the pleasant greenery of the garden and the intense monochromatic rendering of the figures highlights their suffering in an original way. Whilst the traditional 'Agony in the Garden' theme provides an early prelude to crucifixion, Jollyrei presents the highlight of Alice's passion in attractive scenery which successfully enhances the visual tension between pleasure and pain.
