In France breaking on the wheel was reserved for men, sorry. They were also decapitated with a sword. Women were hung or burned at the stake. Read the story of the Sansons, who were executioners to France from 1684 until 1847. They were executioners before that but only in the provinces! Yes even executioners had a pecking order!!

An early Quoom series, very nice. He later made another breaking wheel story called "An Eye For An Eye" I have always liked the breaking wheel, it is second in line behind crux for my fantasies. Yes, this is the best breaking wheel illustration I have ever seen. Quoom created a masterpiece with this series. I am so glad that he went back and reworked his earlier work on the breaking wheel. I joined his site several years ago just to get this series.

Even if the birds don't come down to eat so quickly (and I'm not so sure they would) just imagine lying in agony facing upwards. No onlookers, soldiers walked away, all alone, only pain and sky. The only thing the brain can focus on is pain. The only redeeming feature (before the birds come) is that you don't have to move to breath, but would the victim want to move to try to relieve the pain? Futile.
