A series of images found yesterday. No thematic unity...
The last image here depicts the execution of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury who was 67 years old when she died. Apparently the execution was botched and Margaret was said to have escaped the block and was "hewn down" by the executioner as she ran (pretty good for an elderly lady). It is said it took more than 11 blows to finish her off. On the walls of her cell, it is believed she etched the words found there:
For traitors on the block should die;
I am no traitor, no, not I!
My faithfulness stands fast and so,
Towards the block I shall not go!
Nor make one step, as you shall see;
Christ in Thy Mercy, save Thou me!

Apparently she did not pray for fortitude in the face of death...

Alfred_Dehodencq_-_Execution_of_a_Jewess_in_Tangiers_c1861.jpg

Alfred Dehodencq, Execution of a Jewess in Morocco, circa 1861

There's a story behind these paintings, but I'll only go into it if there's any interest. In any case, they depict the case of a real young woman, Sol Hachuel, beheaded in Fez in public in 1834 for refusing to admit she had converted to Islam.

Love the hair pulling... but you could've guessed that. A wonderfully captured scene, the painting is bursting with authentic detail!

Nice!
But, more "chistian"...hmmm...
#1 is the execution of Brunehaut, carried on a camel before being dragged by an untamed horse (according to the chronicles...)
#4 is an illustration for the novel "Aphrodite", by Pierre Louÿs.
#5 is new for me. According the sign, could be Hypatia of Alexandria, massacred in the 5th century.
Thanks a lot anyway!
