"Las Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho"
(Christian Virgins Exposed to the Mob)
By Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Filipino painter
The original painting was shown at an exhibition in Madrid in 1884. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in a fire in Valladolid in 1939. All that remains is this photograph taken at the exhibition:

However, the replica can still be enjoyed and viewed at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila:

Modern artists have also been inspired by it:

"Aethiopia" was the Greek name for the region south of Egypt; taken from their name of the people as Aithiopean and meaning the people of Nubia, Kush, Punt...basically modern Sudan. The Greeks had almost no direct knowledge of this part of the world and relied on second and third hand accounts.

During the Middle Ages, the name came to be applied to the region known today as Ethiopia. Ethiopia had a coast along the Red Sea until Eritrea seceded in 1993.
To add to the complication, Andromeda's Rock is just off the coast of Israel by Jaffa - St Jerome reported that the ring she was attached to was still on it in his day (4th cent.), and who'd argue with him!

Margaret Wilson also inspired Millais, but the pose was reused from an earlier Andromeda style painting, which had itself been reworked so the maiden is glancing demurely away from the knight

The image continues in use to this day ("Bride of the Sea" from the Witcher game)

The "tits oot" version in Toronto (probably now in a basement ) is by John Bell, who worked in an era when you could put chained up naked women anywhere you liked as long as you were making a statement about intolerance or slavery or something. Sadly a lot of Bell's work was destroyed by fire and bombing but this Andromeda is safe as it was purchased by Queen Victoria (who had no problems with nudity in art) and installed in front of Osborne House.
