Erotic helplessness : a study of the history of the Damsel in Distress theme in art

José de Brito, Martyr of Fanaticism, c. 1895
Having browsed through some of the thread, I restarted at page 1. I came across this inquisition scene of a poor damsel in great distress. There is evidently a fire being stoked under her hind quarters and some gruesome underling is about to entertain her feet with a hot iron - or maybe a "plate" as was used in ancient Rome. It is always good to have a choice for seared flesh, I guess.
She is a pretty woman, and has nice breasts. I suppose the iron can be reheated.

the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife on June 28, 1914 by a Serbian student Gavrilo Princip.

Not sure about "Erotic Helplessness," but the events of June 28, 1914 sort of mark the end of civilized history IMO. By August nearly every power was at war, and the twentieth century was a butcher's yard with something like 100,000,000 people killed for ideological futility. The years 1914 - 1945 were probably the worst in history.

Marian Wawrzeniecki. She produced quite a few drawings of maidens suffering or being sacrificed in a pre-Christian pagan context...
Marian lives so far up our street he could take in our Amazon deliveries when we're out and water our plants when we go away.
Particular love for the well-endowed wooden horsey in the last one.

Not only that but he wrote Bloody specters, curious trials, tortures and strange executions (1909: sadly unillustrated and only available in a scanned, Polish version). This contains (among other things) accounts of the trial, torture, burning and customary pre-burning-rape-by-executioner of a score or more of beautiful young Polish girls accused of witchcraft. These were allegedly based on old documents found in Polish churches but were in fact the product of his own perverted imagination. Even better his sexual fantasies were taken as fact and cited by serious historians. So he was before his time in so many ways.
But you do have to wonder when he stopped using a swastika as his middle initial.

I think indeed that "Milestones" would be a more appropriate thread for this.
Detail : in reality, the Archduke was sitting on the left handside of the car, his wife on the right side, closest to Princip. And hence in the latter's line of fire.

Years ago, I posted a story, where, in the course of the plot, the lead character gets involved in an assassination conspiracy against a high ranked Austrian Archduke. For that scene, I took inspiration from the Sarajevo assassination.

Marie-Therese de Lamballe. . She was torn to pieces by the crowd, and then the severed head, pomaded and curled, was carried through Paris to be shown through bars to Queen Marie Antoinette.

No2 is obviously one of the first members of the Moore clan to become a Mail Order Bride, easily distinguished by the luxurious brown locks, the feisty look and, above all, the prominent tumescent nipples.
All family traits … I have to admit … it’s, as they say, all in the genes.;)

Vincenz Kanzler 1823-1882 documented grisly tales:

The last one, Murder by Pitch Larva, deserves an explanation (pitch larva is a mass of tree resin covered with insect larva).

Old Jordaki told me in his naive way: "If you want to murder someone, you wait until they are asleep. Then you press the mask over their face, but it has to be fresh so that it sticks everywhere and cannot be removed by convulsive resistance. There is only a twitch and at most a dull sigh before the mouth is sealed. There is no need to fear a scream, and no trace remains."
In the evening I asked Mr. Wassylkoff about the pitch masks, which I had never heard of before. He confirmed that this type of murder was rare, but had happened. A few years ago an interesting legal case of this kind had occurred in Jassy. A half-ruined merchant had suffocated his rich ward, whose only relative he was, with a pitch mask in order to inherit from her. The matter had come to light through an accomplice, who was not satisfied with his blood wages and had driven his master to despair with the most outrageous demands. "But what made you think of the pitch masks today?" Wassylkoff asked me at last. "You must have discovered the old mask down there while rummaging around. Right?"
"Yes indeed."
"Yes, that is strange enough. Through her this estate has passed to my branch of the family," said Mr. Wassylkoff, blowing the smoke from his cigar comfortably into the air.

Actually that's La schiava, the slave, by Odoardo Tabacchi, but could as well be Andromeda.
He was keen on erotic poses, especially with peril or helplessness -
View attachment 1493255 his take on Hypatia
Just noticed the posts on Hypatia. Her fate was pretty awful, being the victim of a mob incited (most likely) by Bishop Cyril of Alexandria. This female pagan scholar was torn to pieces by having her skin flayed with sharp oyster shells, her eyes gouged out and the corpse unceremoniously burned. I would rather be crucified.

It was politics in the day. Being a woman probably did not help. Cyril was made a saint. His encitement of a mob was the cause of it's act. (Sound familiar?)

Are you implying Donald Trump will be canonized? :eusa_doh:
