The Wiki on Schivert (who I had not heard of) says he painted a lot of Thirty Years War subjects. Horrible things happened from 1618 to 1648.

The lady in the painting seems to be taken by some frightening character from the Witch Craze of about 1630. She is trying to cover herself, but there is "No Escape."

What will her fate be? Thumbscrews, leg screws, strappado...perhaps the rack and red hot pincers ( )? Will she be burned alive, or will she be raped by the Bishop ?
